Advionics Strengthens Defense Production: Expansion and New SMD Line to Tackle Supply Chain Challenges

To meet rising demand, we are expanding our production facility and investing in a new SMD line. This step is crucial to increase our capacity for defense-qualified production, shorten lead times, and, above all, guarantee reliability.

The defense sector is under pressure. OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) worldwide are experiencing a shortage of production capacity for defense-qualified electronics. Supply chains are becoming increasingly complex due to stricter quality standards, geopolitical uncertainties, and a growing demand for advanced technology. At Advionics, we do not view this challenge as an obstacle, but as an opportunity to empower our customers.

A New SMD Line

To meet rising demand, we are expanding our production facility and investing in a new SMD line. This step is crucial to increase our capacity for defense-qualified production, shorten lead times, and, above all, guarantee reliability. Speed and flexibility are more than just sales pitches. They are part of our DNA.

What is an SMD Line?

SMD stands for Surface Mount Device. An SMD line is a fully automated system for placing and soldering electronic components onto printed circuit boards (PCBs). This system is specifically used for SMD components that are mounted directly onto the surface of the PCB.

Our new SMD line is equipped with state-of-the-art pick-and-place machines, a reflow oven, and an automated inspection system, ensuring we meet the strictest defense and aerospace standards such as AS9100 and ISO 9100.

  • The Europlacer ii-N2 delivers high-speed, flexible component placement, ideal for complex PCB assemblies in aerospace.
  • The Kurtz Ersa Hotflow ensures consistent soldering quality with advanced thermal control and energy efficiency.

The Challenges for OEMs in Defense

OEMs often face various challenges, such as limited production capacity at specialized suppliers, the strict certifications required to produce defense products, as well as supply chain risks caused by geopolitical tensions and material shortages.

The push for industrial participation in defense projects is an interesting evolution. It offers opportunities to strengthen local production capacity.

What is Industrial Participation?

Industrial participation (IP) is a policy where countries executing defense projects require that a portion of the production, knowledge, or technology be realized locally.

The goal is to create economic added value in the purchasing country, limit strategic dependency, and involve local companies in defense programs.

Of course, challenges remain:

  • Complex compliance requirements: National and international regulations regarding defense projects demand strict adherence to export controls and certifications.
  • Capacity planning: OEMs expect rapid scaling, which requires investments in infrastructure and personnel.
  • Technological integration: Collaboration with various partners necessitates the compatibility of systems and processes, requiring extra coordination.
  • Long-term contract cycles: Industrial participation projects often have long lead times, impacting cash flow and resource planning.

For Advionics, these challenges are manageable thanks to our years of experience, certified processes (AS9100, ISO 9001), and flexible production capacity.
